HARPER BAZAAR – Strong Women’s Union

Strong Women’s Union

Last month, a unique legal event was organized in Turkey. We hear from the creators and participants of Istanbul Arbitration Week, which combines law with fashion and art.

First of all, could you tell us a little about yourself?

Sezen Ergen Breitegger: We continue to grow our international law firm, which I founded with Burçin Yıldırım Develioğlu, my partner for almost 10 years. We live between Istanbul and Vienna with my husband Andreas and our son Lucas. After graduating from Izmir Saint Joseph High School, I graduated from Galatasaray Law Faculty and completed my LL.M in Vienna. After working as the head of the Turkey Desk at Lansky, Ganzger + Partners in Vienna for a long time, Burçin and I had the idea to establish our office. Since then, I have been experiencing what it means to work with happiness.

Sezen: In our office, we attach great importance to work-life balance not only for ourselves but also for our team members. Burçin and I work as office owners, managers and lawyers in long and tiresome transactions such as mergers and acquisitions and arbitrations. This balance is only possible with a great team supporting each other. Thanks to the solidarity of women, especially with the high proportion of female employees in our office, we have the chance to spare time for our family and ourselves while successfully progressing in a very competitive environment.

Sezen: Especially after covid, I can say that the idea of such a comprehensive event face to face excited us all. As an art lover, it was a really nice experience to be in an environment that combines two of my favorite fields. Especially thanks to the exhibition at the opening cocktail and the Arbitral Women event where women arbitration experts came together, we had a week where we both contributed a lot to each other professionally and were nourished artistically.

Sezen: I can advise my colleagues who are at the beginning of their journey to research what they like and in which office environment they can be happy in their first years to find the best path that suits their personality and skills. They can achieve great success in their profession by creating a vision for themselves and moving forward without giving up to achieve this vision. I also recommend them to take strength from women’s solidarity with the principle of “woman is woman’s home” and to get in touch with the women they look up to.
